How to use the discussion board.
Nuts and Bolts
Register:
- Click the register button at the upper right of the links on the discussion main page.
- Fill in the information requested and submit.
- Retrieve the system produced e-mail and link to the forum.
- Remember your password -- I cannot retrieve it for you (we can get you a new one though).
Start a new topic:
- Enter a forum either chemistry, honors physics or physics in the TPHS science classes category.
- Click on the "New Topic" button.
- Make sure you include a subject line, then place your text in the body field. Use smilies if you want. Start a poll if you want.
Reply to an existing topic:
- Click the "postreply" button.
- Fill in the fields and submit.
Other than Nuts and Bolts
Civility:
- No profanity.
- No flaming.
- Reasoned and reasonable criticism of "the management" may be tolerated, but consider making your complaints privately.
- Violators will be banned.
Acceptable Use:
The use of a discussion forum is new to me and its appropriate uses are a bit "fuzzy". I hope that we can let these guidelines evolve as the year progresses. For now some initial thoughts:
- The Question of the Day is off limits until its due date has passed.
- Other homework topics, lab reports, lectures, videos etc. are fair game within limits.
- Try to limit discussion to clarification, fine points, isolated "sticking points" etc. in the early going. Most assignments are given days in advance so only as the due date approaches would I expect students to begin comparing complete answers online.
- It is inappropriate to post the solutions to an entire problem set under any circumstance (that I can foresee today anyhow).
- If a problem or question has been the subject of considerable discussion already, it is permissible to post your proposed solution to the forum for other's consumption. The more metacognition evident in the posting, the more appropriate this action.
